A Ventography!

Just two moms letting off some steam

“In 2013, biologist Dr. Brian Hooker received a call from a Senior Scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who led the agency’s 2004 study on the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine and its link to autism.

The scientist, Dr. William Thompson, confessed that the CDC had omitted crucial data in their final report that revealed a causal relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. Over several months, Dr. Hooker records the phone calls made to him by Dr. Thompson who provides the confidential data destroyed by his colleagues at the CDC.

Dr. Hooker enlists the help of Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the British gastroenterologist falsely accused of starting the anti-vax movement when he first reported in 1998 that the MMR vaccine may cause autism. In his ongoing effort to advocate for children’s health, Wakefield directs this documentary examining the evidence behind an appalling cover-up committed by the government agency charged with protecting the health of American citizens.

Interviews with pharmaceutical insiders, doctors, politicians, and parents of vaccine-injured children reveal an alarming deception that has contributed to the skyrocketing increase of autism and potentially the most catastrophic epidemic of our lifetime.”

This film is a documentary  about a cover-up. Please do not refuse to see the film because-

  1. You heard it is an “anti-vaccine”film.
  2. You read a negative review from a reviewer who has not even seen the film.
  3. The media is slamming the film and the directors.

Please see the movie and form your own opinion. If you still disagree with what the movie has to say–that is your prerogative. I applaud you for being open minded enough to see it.

The Difference 1 Makes: Reflections on the CDC Autism Rates

We think this is a well written post. It talks about the new 1:88 statistic from a different perspective. The author says, “Here is the real emergency: For every “1″ in these statistics, there are two parents, four grandparents, numbers of siblings, countless aunts, uncles and cousins, and ALL of them will be affected by the “1.”

We turned on the Today Show at 7:00am sharp expecting to hear… “Good morning. Today’s top story – new numbers just in. One in eighty-eight children are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. What’s behind this frightening epidemic affecting our children?”

But was there a peep about the new CDC autism statistics? Nope. Not a word during the morning teaser about the day’s top stories. Not a word during the first 15 minutes of the show where they covered really important (insert sarcasm here) stories like your odds of winning the upcoming $540M lottery jackpot.

Finally, about 20 minutes into the show, they mentioned the new autism statistics. They had a representative from Autism Speaks and Dr. Nancy Snyderman on to discuss them. The segment lasted only a few minutes. Dr. Nancy went over the obligatory “party line”… the rise in autism is due, in part, to better reporting and broadening the diagnosis (i.e., more disorders are being called autism because of the birth of the “autism spectrum”). We are so sick of hearing about that. Wake up – that’s not what’s going on here. There is a real increase in autism. Even though it’s scary, people need to stop looking the other way or next thing they know, autism will impact them.

Dr. Nancy was surprisingly honest and admitted that we have no idea what causes autism. She said (we’re paraphrasing) “There seems to be environmental triggers for autism and perhaps future research needs to focus on figuring out what those triggers are.”  Ya think?

At last, some acknowledgement in the mainstream media that, while there are likely genetic predispositions at play for our children, there is definitely something (or more likely, lots of things) in our environment causing our children to develop autism. Please, God, somebody help us figure out what they are! We parents are out here drowning trying to solve this mystery all by ourselves. Our children are the early warnings for society that something has gone terribly wrong. If we continue to ignore them, we shudder to think what will happen.

The representative from Autism Speaks was quick to clarify that only a very small part of the increase in autism is due to broadening the diagnosis (THANK YOU!).  She then said, “There is an autism epidemic and we need to form a national plan to address this health crisis.”

Yes! Yes! Yes! If one in eighty-eight children were getting the chicken pox (something that likely won’t kill them and doesn’t cause lifelong disability) we are almost certain there would be a national plan to address the epidemic! Every time we would turn on the tv, we’d be hearing about the epidemic and how we can all work together to eradicate it. WHY ISN’T THIS HAPPENING FOR AUTISM? Think about when there’s been a flu outbreak or even a possible flu outbreak. It gets so much more media coverage than autism. Everyone talks about it. Why not autism? We just don’t get it.

Geraldine Dawson (from Autism Speaks) then made three critical points about what the national plan for autism needs to include:

  • More research on the causes of autism and how to treat it
  • Better diagnosis earlier (so that there is more early intervention)
  • What to do with the rising number of adults with autism; how can we make them productive members of society?

While this was a good segment on the increase of autism, we don’t understand why it’s not the top news story of the day. Will these new statistics get autism the attention it deserves? Sadly, we doubt it.

What do the numbers have to be for people to care? One in ten? Does that warrant attention? Does the President or some Hollywood icon’s child need to have autism? Would that do it? Do we need a fancy, “Kony 2012” style documentary film about autism to go viral? Would that make people care?

Please world – why won’t you help us?

We are introducing a new series of posts about what it’s like to be an autism parent. This is our way of contributing to autism awareness.

In this series, we are not going to discuss the definition of autism or potential causes. We do, however, find those issues extremely important and we have and will continue to discuss them in other series on our blog. But for this new series, our purpose is to make people more aware of what it’s like to walk in an autism parent’s shoes for a day.

We are trying to increase autism awareness by sharing our life and the lives of our closest friends who are living with autism. We want the reader to get a true glimpse into our world, our reality… the “raw” side of autism.

People can’t help or begin to truly understand autism if we don’t open ourselves up and share the struggles we all go through on a daily basis.

Autism parents are stuck in a vicious cycle. We have learned to be masters of “keeping it together”. We tell people everything is fine. We are not very good at asking for help or sharing our sorrows. We often isolate ourselves from society because we’re sick of explaining or making excuses. We know the general public can’t relate to what we’re going through and we’re too tired to educate. Instead of speaking out, we tend to internalize things.

But this is exactly what bites us, the autism community, in the butt.

This is a major reason that so little is known about autism by the general public. And because the public doesn’t really even know what autism is nor what it’s like to parent a child with autism, people are often harsh and judgmental.

We believe autism parents (ourselves included) need to do a better job of letting people in, versus living secretive lives. It is time to speak up.

Perhaps, if the public hears real life stories from autism parents in the trenches, they will become more understanding of our children and less judgmental of us as parents. People may even realize there is an autism epidemic affecting today’s youth, fund autism research, or hound the media to give autism the coverage it deserves.

One percent of the population currently has autism, and many say that number is still rising. Right now, the autism community is easily “swept under the rug” because we (autism parents) are taking care of everything… the bills, the childcare, the healthcare, the education, EVERYTHING. But what is going to happen when we die? When one percent of the population is parentless, and potentially homeless. Who will be responsible then?

Wake up world – autism is going to affect you in one way or another. Please help us now before things get out of control!

What can you do? Forward our autism parenting posts to increase autism awareness and help end the secrecy.

We received a comment to our post that summarized Dr. William Shaw’s webinar about the link between autism and Acetaminophen. Our commenter made us realize that we needed to clarify our position on a few points in case others had the same misunderstandings. The commenter’s points are in black and our response is in red. See https://ventography.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/acetaminophen-and-its-possible-connection-to-the-rise-in-autism/#comments for original comment.

This “A Ventography” site is stated to be a place for ‘non-medically qualified individuals’ to vent their opinions, AND it seems to me that those 2 Moms were promoting this Dr. Shaw’s idea that autism is not caused by vaccines but rather by acetaminophen. We have never met Dr. Shaw, nor are we receiving any sort of payment from him. We wish we were, as our children’s medical, therapy, and education bills are the same as paying college tuition every year. We truly are just 2 moms, sitting at a table in our kitchen, blogging on our daily life and what we feel passionately about.

Now who would be behind Dr. Shaw’s theory….the pharmaceutical companies or the FDA perhaps? Sounds like brainwashing propaganda to me. We are a little confused by this because Tylenol is a product owned and promoted by a company with a pharmaceutical division. We truly believe Dr. Shaw is a friend to the autism community. In fact, he has a step daughter with Rett’s Syndrome. We do not agree that Dr. Shaw is promoting propaganda for big pharma or the FDA. His agenda, in our opinion, is to find out the cause of the autism epidemic. Furthermore, we don’t believe he was saying that Acetaminophen is the sole cause of autism. We just think he genuinely wants to educate people on possible autism contributors. His website discusses many other factors linked to autism (see http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/home/eng/interview.asp if anyone is interested).

I saw a minor flaw in their theory when stating the Cuban rate of autism as compared to that in the USA(which they say is 298 times higher in the USA). The statement that vaccine schedules in Cuba are similar to the U.S. & that children by age of 6 typically receive 34 vaccine agents & 99% of the population complies with the vaccine requirements.” Well, that may be so BUT how do we know if those vaccines in Cuba had the same amount of thimerasol in them that they do in the U.S. or maybe none at all? We think this is a really good question. We do not know who supplies Cuba with their vaccines nor the specific ingredients. We too, would really like to know the facts. If anyone has this information, please pass it along and we will share it.

Sounds like someone is trying to shift the blame again toward something else…now it is acetaminophen…give me a break! We agree with our commenter that there does seem to be quite a few organizations trying to sweep autism under the rug, shift blame, and make “us parents” out to be wack-a-doodles when we talk about how toxins caused our children to regress into autism.

My grandchildren, at the time , were ages 1-1/2 & 2-1/2 when they received the vaccine and both now have developmental delays & autism. HOWEVER, they were fine & developing right on target prior to the vaccines but afterward, regressed, one began having speech problems & the other stopped talking at all & would wakeup many times with excruciating pain in her head at night. We are so sorry for your pain. We relate more than you know. We too are mad that our children were in essence, stolen from us. Annie regressed at 21 months and I will never get over that loss. Brody had a very adverse reaction to the DTP vaccine at 2 months of age and Annie had a severe reaction to the Varicella vaccine at 12 months. We believe vaccines to be one of the major culprits causing children to regress into autism. We cannot say it was the sole cause for our children, but we most definitely believe it played a part. And we do not believe it is just the “thimerosal” in the vaccines causing the problem. We feel it is also all the other junk they put in them, like aluminum, formaldehyde, embryos, and yeast causing our children to have negative reactions. If anyone is interested in specific vaccine ingredients (according to the CDC) or our position on vaccines, we listed them on our website at http://www.healthinducedautism.com/cdc-vaccination-information.html

Thanks to therapy & specialists who have worked with them to overcome theses issue, they are both now doing well although they will always have the problem  We are so glad your grandchildren are doing better. We can never hear enough positive stories about progress… it gives us hope and keeps us going.

….AND they still take Tylenol for headaches. fever, flu, etc with absolutely no indication of the autistic behavior becoming worse. Wouldn’t you think that if a child continued to Tylenol they would become worse instead of better? This is where we seem to have a difference of opinion. Perhaps their recovery could be even greater or faster if they stopped taking substances that suppress glutathione (and thereby, their immune systems).
